Know your opener before you order
| Learn button color | Technology | Approx. years |
|---|---|---|
| Green | Billion Code, 390 MHz | 1993 to 1997 |
| Red or orange | Security+, 390 MHz | 1997 to 2004 |
| Purple or brown | Security+, 315 MHz | 2005 to 2014 |
| Yellow (round) | Security+ 2.0, 310/315/390 MHz | 2011 onward |

The learn button is on the back or side of the motor unit, near the antenna wire. Its color, together with the model number on the label, tells us which board, remotes and accessories fit your opener.
Repair the part or replace the opener?
Repair makes sense when
The opener is under about 10 to 15 years old, only one part has failed, the part is still made, and you’re happy with its noise level and features. A gear kit, capacitor, belt or board swap is a fraction of the cost of a new opener.
A new opener makes sense when
The failed part is discontinued, several parts are failing at once (board plus gear plus motor), the opener is very old, or you want battery backup, Wi-Fi and quieter operation. See our LiftMaster openers.
Not sure which part you need? Send us the model number from the opener label, or book a visit. We diagnose, source and install LiftMaster parts across South Florida.
Book a repairCommon questions about LiftMaster parts
What are the most common garage door opener parts to fail?
On LiftMaster chain and belt openers, the most common are the plastic drive gear, the logic board (often after power surges), the start capacitor on AC motors, the belt or chain, and the wall control. Safety sensor problems are also very common but usually need adjustment, not a new part.
How do I find my LiftMaster model number?
It’s on the label on the back or side of the motor unit, near the learn button. It usually starts with digits such as 8550W, 81650 or 87802. Together with the learn button color, it tells us exactly which parts fit.
Should I repair my garage door opener or replace it?
Repair when one part has failed on an opener that’s otherwise sound and the part is still made. Replace when the part is discontinued, several parts are failing, the opener is very old, or you want battery backup and Wi-Fi.
Are LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman parts the same?
Chamberlain and most Craftsman openers are made by The Chamberlain Group, the same company as LiftMaster, and many parts are shared or similar. They aren’t always identical, so match by part number. We service all three brands, plus Genie.
Can I buy the part and install it myself?
Many parts can be replaced by a handy homeowner, but choosing the wrong version is common, and some jobs involve spring tension, electrical work or setting travel and force limits. If the door itself is heavy or unbalanced, the new part will fail early.
Do you install LiftMaster parts I already bought?
Yes, if it’s the correct part for your opener. We check the part number against your model before installing, and we’ll tell you if it won’t fit.
Which areas do you serve for opener repair?
Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Collier and Lee counties, from our South Florida offices.
