Emergency Garage Door Repair Scams:

  • Scammers who target homeowners in need of emergency garage door service often prey on the unsuspecting individual's sense of urgency.

  • After you contact one of these scammers, they will try to perform unnecessary repairs with unneeded parts and charge expensive fees for these services.

  • Scammers who pretend to be garage door repairmen take advantage of the homeowner's lack of knowledge about how much parts and services should cost.

Common Garage Door Problems:

  • If your photo eye is misaligned or obstructed, you can easily fix it by cleaning and readjusting it until the light is no longer flashing.

  • Broken spring: If the spring above the door is broken, you will need to replace it. You can tell if it is broken if there is a gap between the coils. If you have two springs, you should replace both at the same time.

  • Garage door remote not working: If one of your remotes is not working, replacing the battery may solve the issue. If that is not the problem or none of your remotes work, please contact us.

  • Noisy garage door: A noisy door can often be quieted by lubricating the hinges, rollers, and springs. If your door is still rattling and shaking, your Clopay Dealer can address the problem quickly and professionally.

How To Spot a Garage Door Scam:

  • The scammers who target garage doors often use multiple names, generic names, or names that are unclear.

  • The name of your dealer should be the same on their website and other advertising.

  • If you're wondering whether or not a garage door scammer is legitimate, one way to check is to search for their showroom address on Google Maps. If there's no physical showroom associated with the address, it's likely that the business is a scam

  • If you're considering using a company that advertises low-cost service calls, make sure to get a quote on their recommended services before agreeing to have the work done. Otherwise, you may end up being charged extra fees.

Tips to Avoid Garage Door Scams:

  • When you call a repair service, your phone call is one of the best ways to tell if you are being set up for a scam.

  • Listen to the garage door company’s name when they answer the phone. Does it match what is on their website or advertising?

  • If a garage door service company has trouble consistently stating their name, it is likely that they will have trouble with other aspects of their business. Choose another company.

How to Measure for a New Garage Door?

  • Measure Width & Height - The width and height of the garage door opening is the same size as your new garage door.

  • Measure Sideroom - This is the width of the areas on the left and right of the garage door opening. Opening must be at least 3-3/4” on each side.

  • Measure Headroom - This is the distance between the top of the door and the ceiling (or 1st obstruction). Distance required for most doors with an opener is 15”.

  • Measure Backroom - This is the distance from the garage door to the rear of the garage (or 1st obstruction). This must be at least the door height plus 18”; or door height plus 50” if an opener is installed.
